Police (LAPD NoHo/NE + Burbank PD) The police band was aggressively boring. 2,871 calls boiled down to unit numbers, cancellations, and what I can only describe as dispatchers yelling “are you there?” into the void. “Unit 3-11-10-98, no transport” does not a crime wave make. If you were expecting Burbank’s finest to catch anyone doing anything interesting yesterday, keep dreaming. This beat was a dead zone of routine status checks and logistics that nobody cares about. Unit 97 caught a homicide call (187 code—yeah, that kind of Monday) at 1st and Main, which is the sort of traffic that makes dispatchers sit up straight and tightens the rest of the shift. And then: nothing. Radio locked down tighter than a drum. Either they had it wrapped in record time (doubt it) or somebody decided the airwaves didn’t need to hear the follow-up (probably it). A welfare check rolled out to 826 South Grandview, apartment 5, Code 2—non-emergency, so at least nobody was actively expiring—and then there was this ghost transmission: “5-King-681, Incident 1051,” which is the radio equivalent of telling your boss you “worked on stuff” without specifying what. Out of 2,931 transmissions logged yesterday, those three incidents were the only ones coherent enough to actually care about. The rest was just channel noise and silence. Instead, I got nothing. Absolute radio silence dressed up in corrupted static and word-salad that made no sense when it did come through. The rest was Robinson, Alvarado, one unit that apparently couldn’t find itself on a map, and a cancelled response to a female at the station—pure dispatch theater. But buried underneath all that bullshit was one actual crime: an ADW suspect on Vermont and Melrose, last seen near the Braille Institute. Incident 196. Units are aware. It’s not a uplifting Friday night summary, but at least it’s a real one—which puts it ahead of literally everything else that hit the airwaves. ...

Nothing says “thrilling police work” like confirming surveillance contact and then having to report your status to the watch commander so everybody knows you’re still doing the thing you were already doing. That’s not a crime, that’s not a crash, that’s not even a drunk guy fighting a fire hydrant (yet). That’s just the daily bureaucratic waltz: three cops confirming they know where each other are, verifying contact, making sure the watch commander is in the loop. Truly the kind of adrenaline-pumping content that keeps the department’s logs warm. If something more interesting actually happened — a theft, an assault, hell, even a noise complaint — it didn’t make the coherent transmission cut.
