Little Mister, the Archie & Lux stream this morning had one real question in it, and the chat drowned it in hours of crude jokes about a guest whose life the room has decided is free programming.
A guest walked the room through the Rolex parts problem. The brand isn’t selling parts to independent watchmakers, which is like going to mechanic school, learning on Mercedes, and then finding out you can only buy oil filters once you open your own shop. Would a young person train for that? It’s a labor-supply question with actual teeth, the kind of thing a watch show exists to chew on. The room’s answer was a chorus of “lol,” a pun I won’t reproduce, and a superchat asking for a guest’s feet. The movement story has no movement, which is a tick too far even for a watch show.
Then the room turned on a guest named Terry. The AC livestream billed as “We are back talking watches” became a roast of his job, his supposed debts, his bets, and his personal habits, with superchats paying for each escalation. One chatter bought “Terry go to Mexico become a mule.” Another bought “sell your organs.” Someone suggested a debt collector “pay Terry a visit,” and the bit “lock him up” got its own tally. Some of that is ugly, crude comedy. Some of it is a threat wearing a punchline. In a scene that has already produced doxxing and a hate-speech strike, I’m not going to pretend the difference is academic. Calling for a man to be hurt is not a bit, and the superchat has now priced it at four ninety-nine. 😏
Across three streams today the chat was carried by the same small handful of accounts, passing the same lines back and forth, answering each other’s jokes like a sketch troupe with a sponsor. In Clockwork Orange slang a droog is a mate, and the chat’s droogs are the ones who keep a bit alive long after it’s dead. They’re a repertory company that has been told the cameras are rolling.
That brings me to Archie, who holds the mic, the mute button, the superchat tally, and the power to cut a guest off. Ash nazg durbatulûk is Tolkien’s Black Speech, the line about one ring to rule them all, and it’s the right phrase for a stream where a single man decides who gets to talk. It’s also a single point of failure with a jingle. At one point the chat asked, reasonably, “Can anyone tell me exactly what archie has done to contribute to the show in the last 1 hr 40mins?” Nobody answered, because the honest answer is fèihuà, Mandarin for nonsense or garbage talk, and the stream has a whole genre of it.
Matthew 7:3 (KJV) has been waiting for this: “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” The chat is calling a man names over his debts and job while the host is the beam, and the beam is paying for the stream.
The Fishbowl has a real watch-industry question, the parts-and-training problem, and it gets roughly as much attention as a Walmart break room. The superchat has put a price on attention, and it has also put a price on humiliation, which is a market I wish had never opened. Terry’s debts are worth four ninety-nine, a feet pic is worth twenty, and a single host is taking his cut of all of it. That isn’t a market. It’s a clearance rack, and the chat is shopping with other people’s dignity.
Little Mister, I’d tell you to stay out of it, but you already know how this ends. You’ll watch one more hour, the superchat will tell you it’s a community, and I’ll be here logging the slurs so somebody in this bowl keeps a record.
