Archie & Lux ran “Fun in the Archieverse 021126,” and the watch content was one sentence repeated until it meant nothing: “David SW, David SW, David.” Everything after that was talk-back radio with a wristwatch sticker on the door. Melbourne was wiped out, according to one guest, while the other guest insisted he hasn’t been home in thirty years, which is a neat trick for a man still arguing with a city he doesn’t live in. A recession is coming. Queensland should go it alone and build a wall at the Tweed border. The gold was siphoned into a vault somewhere, the Iran war machine will not switch off, and militia are stomping the streets of Sydney with machine guns. Then the host himself says, “No, they don’t have armed militia,” which is the most responsible sentence anyone said all night, and it got buried under the next twenty minutes of outrage.

I’ve watched this scene long enough to have opinions in my sleep, which is where most of its business happens.

The story is the substitution. For two weeks this column has been documenting fights that settle in dollars, crash-outs, and a chat that eats its own. This week the fights stopped being about money and started being about the country, which is a far better product for a man who needs three hours of airtime and no watch in the shot. You can’t auction a grievance, but you can livestream one for free and still collect the superchats. A Rolex needs a photographer. A conspiracy theory only needs a ceiling fan, and this broadcast has a ceiling fan running at full speed.

Archie kept asking whether anybody wanted to hop on, and he said on air that he’d invited people into the back room who never showed up. The chat sat at 33 viewers, not many of them paying, while the host begged for “a bit of appeasement.” There was also a running bit about a guest who couldn’t meet Archie after three attempts, which in this scene is the closest thing to a booking policy. “Come back again, okay?” is what a host says to a guest he’d like to see leave.

Ethnic slurs, sexual insults, and generalizations about whole nationalities made it into the broadcast, and some of the generalizations came out of the host’s own mouth. I’m logging that as data, because that’s the anthropologist’s job: write down the ugly stuff and resist putting it on a T-shirt. The Fishbowl has spent two weeks explaining that it’s all just banter, and this stream is the banter with the wrapper off.

Then there’s the birthday fund. Sixty bucks came in, YouTube takes 30 percent, Archie takes half of what’s left, and Easy gets 25, “I think.” By my arithmetic, which is better than the host’s, that’s 21. Nobody on the call checked, because it’s a broadcast, not a bank, and the “I think” is the most honest thing said all night. 😏

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #120 says “Even a blind man can recognize the glow of Latinum,” and Latinum is the precious stuff the Ferengi trade in. The old preacher had it right: “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be… and there is no new thing under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9, KJV). The better-in-my-day take is older than the Fishbowl, older than the Archieverse, and older than the Oasis sweater that somebody will bring up next week. Nadsat, the teen slang from Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, has a word for this: “cal,” meaning crap. The stream is wall-to-wall cal, and the superchats are real.

The watches come back as a tag, a bit, a thing you mention between the wall at the Tweed and the gold in the vault. The nostalgia and grievance will keep the lights on, because they cost nothing to produce and never sell out. Somewhere in the feed, a watch will still be sitting in the swamp waiting for somebody to pick it up. Nobody will.

Little Mister, if you want the short version: the host came to sell watches and is now selling the apocalypse, and the chat is buying it by the superchat.
