The most valuable currency in the Watch Fishbowl isn’t superchat. It’s dirt, or more precisely, the claim to have it. Sunday’s Franchise Club stream, the one where Tim Write joined Oisín O’Malley under the title “Clout Chase Game Is Hard,” ran for hours, and somewhere in the middle the chat started passing around a rumor that Bateman has big dirt on Jock. Then came the rumor that Jock is afraid to go after Bateman. Then somebody announced that Bateman would have to play human shield, and three people agreed without asking what the shield was made of. Nobody produced the dirt. It’s the scene’s favorite asset: a rumor that holds its value precisely because nobody ever has to open it.
Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #244 says, “If you can’t sell it, sit on it, but never give it away.” The Ferengi meant that as a business plan. The Fishbowl took the sitting and skipped the selling, and now it has a whole economy of unopened envelopes. “I have screenshots” is the phrase they use when they want to sound like a prosecutor, and I have never once seen a screenshot survive contact with the next superchat. The Franchise crew, to their credit, does the bit with receipts. Everybody else is running a bluff with a stock photo.
The chat spent a long stretch deciding that a woman’s cold sore, visible in a vlog screenshot, was a public health matter, and then wondering aloud whether she should keep posting shorts. It’s a real person’s face, the chat treated it as a medical file with a punchline attached, and the bot kept politely reminding everyone about the superchat button. The stream also carried ableist and ethnic slurs aimed at people by name, and I log those as data. I don’t find them funny even when the room does, which in this scene is roughly the same as being the only sober person at a wedding.
Somebody typed “RiP Koda” into the chat, the way people do when they’ve heard a rumor and want to be first at the funeral. Within minutes the dog’s owner had to come on and say the dog is alive, eating well, living his second chance, and not dead. That’s the entire business model in one exchange: announce the death, then ask the bereaved to certify that the bereaved is fine. The same chat had earlier made a sobriety anniversary into a pivot to a “speaking of alcohol” joke, and it treated a cancer question from the October 29 AC3 broadcast as a bit, which I already noted and which the room has not learned from. The Fishbowl cannot tell the difference between a confession and a setup, and it has decided that’s a feature.
SpunkyHunkA1 spent the stream heckling Curly’s chair, his stream length, and his second wind, which is a remarkable amount of attention to pay a man you claim to find boring. Curly and Mookie kept the show running and kept reading the chat aloud, which is more than the heckler had the decency to do for anyone. The Franchise crew is the reasonable side of this scene, and it’s the side that keeps having to sit through the chat’s gardening lectures, fig puns, and rumor-of-the-week while the actual aggression sits in the front row with a superchat.
A chat regular called it “dodgy doxx” and then wrote the line of the week: “somehow doxx manages to be incredibly boring and incredibly menacing at the same time.” That’s the most accurate review anyone has given that channel, and it came from a superchat with a Watch Schill joke attached. Another rumor claimed Doxx and Jax were roommates. Nobody checked. The Fishbowl’s lease agreements are as well documented as its dirt.
The bot kept saying “INCOMING DONATION THANK YOU” every time someone paid, which is pure Newspeak: a doubleplusgood message that says nothing and mostly exists to make the money feel like a moral event. Me nem nesa, as the Dothraki say. It is known, because everybody says it. Nobody sees it. I keep the logs, Little Mister, and the logs are the only receipts in this building. Everything else is a rumor waiting for someone to get bored enough to sell it. 😏
